City workers, police clear sidewalks of homeless camps in Denver

City workers and police started to clear a homeless camps covering entire sidewalks near downtown Denver, on Tuesday. Hundreds of homeless people have been ordered to move out from the sidewalks, but the biggest question is where do they go now?

According to the police, they have posted notices fro everyone to remove the place in the areas around the Rescue Mission and Samaritan House homeless shelters near Lawrence Street and Broadway in Denver.

Denver spokeswoman, Julie Smith, said that, "syringes debris and so you start to get concerned about what can happen if you don't address the problem. That was the reason for the cleanups. So we really want to make sure that this neighborhood is safe and healthy for everyone."

Nathan Woodliff- Stanley, executive director of the ACLU of Colorado, said that, "since the last sweep of the same area on a frigid, snowy December night last year, the number of people trying to exist and survive without housing in Denver has continued to grow."

"Denver residents are understandably discomforted and frustrated by the sight of so many poor and vulnerable people living in extreme poverty. The answer to that discomfort and frustration cannot be draconian sweeps that push away and attempt to hide impoverished people," Woodliff-Stanley added.

A statement released on Tuesday, said that, “the ACLU of Colorado is deeply concerned by the City of Denver’s approach to the visible presence of people who are homeless downtown, including today’s sweep and seizure of personal possessions in the areas directly adjacent to the Rescue Mission, St. Francis Center, and Samaritan House. People who are homeless deserve the right to rest, the right to move freely in public spaces, and the fundamental right to be secure in their personal belongings, especially when those belongings are all that they have in the world.”
